Leang Seckon

1970 -

Leang Seckon was born in 1970 in Prey Veng Province, Cambodia. He was born during the outbreak of the American bombing of Indochina and grew up during the rise of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. Seckon graduated from the plastic art department in 1996 and from the design in 2002 at the Royal University of Fine Art in Phnom Penh, where he lives and works today. Seckon’s painting and collaging art practice offers on memories, historic, current points and personal narratives of his childhood and chronicles an undocumented Cambodia.

Leng Seckon is one of the first generation of Cambodian contemporary artist in 2000s. His works have been exhibited locally and internationally. His selected solo exhibitions include Leang Seckon - New Work, IFC Gallery, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2018); When Head and Body United, Rossi & Rossi Gallery, Hong Kong (2017); Influence: The New Age, Java Café & Gallery, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2016); The King Card Falls on the Road, Rossi & Rossi at Art Basel Hong Kong (2015); Hell on Earth, Rossi & Rossi, London, UK (2014) and Shadow of the Heavy Skirt, French Cultural Center, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2011). His selected group exhibitions and festival include Leang Seckon Prophecy, Macnichols Civic Center, Denver, USD (2019); Rebirth Revitalise Regeneration, National Museum of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2017); Mekong New Mythologies, Hong Kong Arts Center, Hong Kong (2016); the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT8), the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2015); Shaghai Biennale, China (2012) and 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Japan (2009).

Leang Seckon was received medal from Queen Norodom Monineath (2014) and King Norodom Sihamoni personally endorses Naga, Seckon’s work with Kids and Rubbish (2008). He was a Sovereign Asia Art Prize Finalist (2009) and (2005); received Second Prize, paining contest, HIV/AIDS World AIDS Day, UNESCO and Final selection for the 2000 International Poster Contest “A World of Opportunities”, UNFPA (2000).
